Straight answers on Shariah finance.
Licensing, Zakat, wills, Nikah, screening, enterprise work, and our tools — written the way we answer clients in Hong Kong.
General & company
What is Islamic finance?
Islamic finance follows Shariah principles: no interest (riba), no excessive uncertainty (gharar), no gambling (maysir), and no investment in prohibited activities. It emphasises asset-backed dealings, risk-sharing, and ethical screens — often guided by AAOIFI standards in professional practice.
Are you SFC-licensed or a bank?
No. Baashir Advisory Group Limited is a Shariah advisory and educational consultancy. We are not licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), the Insurance Authority, or the Estate Agents Authority. We do not handle client investment funds or give regulated investment advice on whether a product is "good to buy."
Who do you serve?
Individuals and families (Zakat, wills, Nikah, inheritance, screening), businesses, enterprises, banks and institutions, plus training programmes. See Services.
What makes Baashir different?
Independent Shariah-focused advisory from Hong Kong, AAOIFI-aligned where we apply standards, with practical tools (live Zakat and Faraid calculators) and a clear line between educational guidance and regulated financial advice.
Do you work outside Hong Kong?
Yes. HQ is in Hong Kong; much advisory work is remote. Cross-border and Gulf–Asia introductions are available where appropriate. Overseas property introductions are partner-led and not Hong Kong estate agency.
How do fees work?
Most individual services use clear package fees (for example Zakat calculation from published rates, Nikah packages, fatwa requests from 800 HKD). Enterprise, Sukuk, and ongoing monitoring use scoped proposals or retainers. Ask via contact if unsure.
Zakat
What is Zakat and who must pay?
Zakat is a mandatory 2.5% on qualifying wealth held for one lunar year (hawl) once wealth exceeds Nisab. It is one of the five pillars. Try our free calculator for an estimate, then book for a certificate-ready breakdown.
Is Zakat due on my home or car?
Generally no for a primary residence, personal vehicle, and ordinary household goods. Zakat typically focuses on growing wealth such as cash, gold/silver beyond personal use rules, business inventory, receivables, and many investments. Edge cases need a human review.
How is Zakat calculated on stocks?
It depends on intention and holding style (e.g. trading vs longer-term). Screening and purification may also apply. Our calculator helps organise figures; a booked calculation handles the written method for your situation.
Do businesses pay Zakat?
Muslim-owned businesses often do — typically looking at cash, inventory, receivables, and similar items less relevant liabilities. See corporate Zakat for a structured assessment.
Can Baashir distribute my Zakat?
Where offered as an add-on, we can help route Zakat toward eligible asnaf categories with documentation. Ask when you book a calculation — availability depends on the engagement.
Is the online Nisab live?
Yes — the calculator uses gold/silver rates maintained in our system. Re-check near your hawl date; rates move.
Investing & screening
What makes an investment halal?
Two common screens: activity (business lines must not be prohibited) and financial ratios (debt, interest income, and similar metrics within AAOIFI-aligned thresholds). Mixed companies may need purification of a portion of income.
Do you give investment advice?
No. We provide Shariah screening — whether holdings align with AAOIFI-aligned criteria. We do not advise on expected returns or whether you should buy or sell. See investment screening.
Is a conventional mortgage halal?
A standard interest-bearing mortgage is riba-based and not Shariah-compliant. Alternative structures (e.g. diminishing musharakah, ijarah) exist in some markets. Baashir may educate and take waitlist interest for Hong Kong products — we do not sell bank loans.
What is Sukuk?
Sukuk represent ownership interests in assets or ventures, not a conventional interest-bearing loan. Profit comes from the underlying activity. Structuring and documentation review are specialised — see our enterprise desk.
How does purification work?
If a largely compliant company earns a small impermissible portion (often interest-related), that slice of dividends is typically donated without expecting religious reward. Screening engagements can quantify the ratio for your holdings.
Family — wills, Nikah, inheritance
Do I need an Islamic will in Hong Kong?
If you die without a will, Hong Kong intestacy rules apply — they do not follow Faraid. An Islamic will (wasiyyah) helps align distribution with Shariah, appoint guardians, and use the discretionary third where appropriate. See Islamic wills.
What is Faraid?
Faraid is the Quranic fixed-share inheritance system for entitled heirs. Try the educational Faraid calculator, then book a memo for family use.
What is in the Nikah package?
Can non-Muslims witness a Nikah?
For the Islamic contract, the two formal witnesses are typically adult Muslim men under classical requirements. Non-Muslim family and friends are welcome to attend and celebrate.
Do you handle divorce or funeral guidance?
Yes — practical Shariah guidance for those life events is listed under Individuals. Start at Individuals & families.
Business, enterprise & institutions
Can you help a conventional business become Shariah-aligned?
Yes. We review revenue, contracts, financing, and operations, then map remediation and governance. See business compliance and related services under Businesses.
Do you issue Halal food certificates?
No. We provide advisory and preparation support; we are not a Halal certification body. We can help you prepare and connect with recognised certifiers where appropriate.
What about Sukuk, IPO, and fund work?
Institutional desks cover Sukuk Shariah advisory, pre-IPO screening, fund auditing themes, and related documentation. Start at Enterprises or Banks.
How does Gulf–Asia / capital introduction work?
We facilitate introductions and Shariah structuring conversations between parties. We do not deal in Hong Kong property as an estate agent. Outcomes depend on counterparties — introductions are not investment offers.
How long do audits take?
Small product or SME reviews may take weeks; fund, pre-IPO, or full enterprise programmes can take months. We scope timelines in the proposal.
Technology & tools
What technology is live today?
Online booking, certificates/invoices behind the digital platform, the Zakat calculator, and the Faraid calculator. See Technology.
What about AI screening and APIs?
Those are on the roadmap (screening / customer service targeting later 2026; contracts, fatwa assist, and APIs into 2027). Join the waitlist — interest only, not a purchase contract. AI assists humans; it does not auto-certify.
Is my data safe?
