HKU Hall High Table Dinner Halal Catering Incident Highlights Need for Cultural Sensitivity
A non-local student at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) recently expressed disappointment on social media after receiving an estimated HK80 fast-food KFC meal at a HK500 high table dinner at Simon F.S. Li Hall, despite having requested halal food in advance. While the student acknowledged the organizers' effort to provide halal meat alongside the base vegetarian menu, the significant disparity in presentation and perceived value sparked online discussion. In response, HKU stated that hall wardens have instructed student organizers to refine catering and communication for future events to foster an inclusive campus. Eastern District Councilor Zareenah Ho Sau-yin noted that while the oversight likely stemmed from student inexperience, providing appropriate halal options is straightforward in Hong Kong, highlighting the ongoing importance of proactive cultural understanding as the city engages with diverse communities.
